An important note for Qlikkies: Are you ready to elevate your dashboards? Dive into our latest Qlik tutorial — discover the power of the Decomposition Tree and learn how to create it in Qlik Sense in about no time!

Originally making waves in Microsoft Power BI, this game-changing visualization is now ready to streamline your Qlik Sense experience. Offering unparalleled ease and efficiency for drilling into metrics, it enables intuitive root cause analysis and ad-hoc exploration of complex datasets on (a part of) a single sheet.

The Decomposition Tree excels in illuminating the intricate relationships between different components within the dataset, providing an intuitive means to understand each part’s contribution to the whole. Identifying the key drivers of a metric or outcome becomes a breeze!

Start unlocking more insights in no hassle! Watch this video tutorial to learn how to add a decomposition tree into your Qlik Sense apps right away! And, at the end of the day, nothing stops you from giving it an instant try.

This tutorial walks you through the intuitive creation of the Decomposition Tree in Qlik Sense, broken down into the following stages.

1. Introduction to the Decomposition Tree

Familiarize yourself with the Decomposition Tree in Qlik Sense. This initial overview demonstrates how it segments totals across various dimensions, allowing for metrics’ in-depth ad-hoc exploration and root cause analysis with precision.

2. Crafting a Decomposition Tree in Qlik Sense

The creation of a decomposition tree is straightforward, involving four basic steps:

Step 1: Install the extension

Start by downloading the Decomposition Tree extension for Qlik Sense. Follow the simple installation instructions provided in the extension’s readme file, tailored to your specific Qlik Sense environment, whether it’s Enterprise, Desktop, or Cloud.

Step 2: Set up an app

Starting fresh? Click on “Create new app” in the hub, give the app a name, and then open it. Add your data by selecting “Add data from files and other sources.” For example, if you have a CSV file, just browse and select it.

Step 3: Add the extension to a sheet

In the Edit mode of the sheet where you want to include the decomposition tree, locate the AnyChart Decomposition Tree extension under Custom Objects and drag it onto your canvas.

Step 4: Add measures and dimensions

Select a measure to dissect and add dimensions for a comprehensive breakdown. You can do this using the provided buttons or through the Data tab in the properties panel.

3. Explore the Resulting Decomposition Tree

The journey begins with the root element of your metric. To delve deeper, click on the plus sign next to the value bar and select a dimension to explore further. This functionality reveals significant contributors within that dimension and facilitates exploration without the need to pre-select the order of dimensions, thanks to the Flex Dimensions feature.

4. Customizing Your Decomposition Tree

You can tailor your Decomposition Tree with a variety of customization options. The tutorial shows a few of them:

  • Enable paging: Ideal for when you have many elements to display.
  • Fix the order of dimensions: Establish a pre-defined exploration path.
  • Rescale bars: Adjust how the length of value bars is calculated to suit your analysis needs.
  • Tweak colors: Align the visualization with your brand or highlight specific data patterns.
  • And more: The customization possibilities are virtually limitless! You can add multiple measures and switch between them in Analyze mode, hide dimension column headers, disable tooltips, and adjust the view to either compact or wide, among other adjustments.

If you’ve made it this far, perhaps the static format resonates more with you. For those who prefer reading to watching videos, we also have a detailed text-plus-screenshots Decomposition Tree Tutorial right here on our blog, using tech layoffs data for a practical illustration.
